Testing and Commissioning

Testing and commissioning is relevant when new or altered equipment needs to be set up and its operation confirmed. It helps the owner receive a usable installation, rather than a collection of components that have only been switched on.

Tell us what needs doing

What the work includes

  1. Define systems, boundaries and acceptance requirements.
  2. Identify prerequisites and specialist test responsibilities.
  3. Sequence component and integrated-system checks.
  4. Record measurements, settings and findings.
  5. Resolve failures and assemble the commissioning package.

Important decisions

Distinguish installation inspection, functional testing and performance demonstration. A component passing its own test does not establish that the connected system operates correctly. Agree the conditions, witnesses and evidence needed for acceptance, including any tests that require seasonal conditions or normal occupancy.

Assessment and the project brief

Supply the installation details and the intended operating result. Confirm that connected services, controls and access will be ready, and identify who will receive the instructions and operate the equipment after handover.

How the project proceeds

  1. Prepare the test and commissioning requirements.
  2. Confirm installation readiness and safe test conditions.
  3. Perform the agreed component and system checks.
  4. Correct findings and repeat affected tests.
  5. Record final results, settings and operating information.

Working in occupied properties

Explain which areas or services will be interrupted during testing. Keep occupants informed and allow access to the equipment and control points needed to complete the checks without repeated visits.

Budget and programme factors

The number of systems, test complexity, witnessing, access and readiness affect time and cost. Failed prerequisites can create repeat attendance. Include the time needed to correct findings and retest, and identify deferred seasonal checks separately.

Completion and handover

The owner should receive clear results and instructions, including any limitations or follow-up tests. Demonstrate the controls needed for normal use and explain the maintenance information that belongs with the equipment.

Projects across sectors

Data centres and critical environments need interfaces and failure scenarios carefully defined. Offices need controls and room conditions demonstrated. Healthcare and care need operational interruptions planned around users. Explore the full sector range to connect the project with the premises and its users.

Locations covered

We work across the recorded North East England coverage area, including Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham and the wider Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Teesside locations. Find your area in the locations directory and include the full property address when discussing the project.

Frequently asked questions

Is switching equipment on the same as commissioning?

No. Commissioning checks and sets up the installation against defined requirements, with measurements or functional evidence appropriate to the system.

Can testing be left until the last day?

The requirements should be planned early. Access, specialist attendance, system readiness and time for corrections need to be included in the programme.

What happens when a test fails?

Record the finding, identify the corrective work and repeat the affected test after correction. Acceptance should use the final result rather than the original failed record.

Why might a test be deferred?

Some performance checks need particular weather, occupancy or connected-system conditions. Record the reason, required conditions and responsibility for completing the deferred test.
